Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said that eliminating illegal infiltration would be the Bharatiya Janata Party’s top priority if it comes to power in West Bengal after the 2026 Assembly elections. Speaking at a press conference in Kolkata, Shah stated that the BJP would not only prevent future illegal infiltration but also take steps to identify and remove those currently residing illegally in the state.
Shah accused the Trinamool Congress government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, of failing to act against infiltration and alleged that the state administration has indirectly encouraged the issue. He also raised concerns over resistance to fencing along the India-Bangladesh border, calling illegal infiltration in West Bengal a matter of national security.
The Union Home Minister further launched a strong attack on the state government over alleged corruption, citing scams related to coal, cattle smuggling, and recruitment irregularities. He claimed that several Trinamool Congress leaders have faced legal action due to corruption charges.
Highlighting women’s safety, Shah said the situation in West Bengal has deteriorated and demanded accountability from the state government. Emphasizing the BJP’s historical connection to the state, he expressed confidence that the party’s growing support since 2016 would translate into an electoral victory in 2026.
